What do you do when the sun is absolutely begging you to get outside? Well in my case, you head off to walk the Gibsons seawall, which just happens to bring you to Smitty’s Oyster House, the latest creation of Stafford Lumley, owner/operator of Rodney’s Oyster Bar in Yaletown.

Well it was lunch time, so what else. I’m a sucker for fish & chips and Smitty’s is right up there with the best of them. I ordered the halibut fritters – small cubes of fish, perfectly cooked in a very light tempura style batter, served with thick-cut sweet potato frites, a malt vinegar reduction, and their “top-secret’ tartar sauce.
Naturally, I sat outside. Smitty’s outside patio is communal style. Seating is at an expansive 27 foot, polished spruce plank table, and mere feet away from the glistening ocean. It creates a great atmosphere to socialize, so I had the opportunity to share comments with others, all well-pleased with Smitty’s offerings from the sea – crab cakes, clam chowders, and of course, a variety of oysters, both on the half-shell and cooked.
Smitty’s opens at noon and continues on throughout the evening – and they say, that’s when the real fun begins. But I might disagree… how good is a great lunch and a cold micro-brew, sitting in the bright sunshine, just feet away from the salty brine. Did someone say winter was over?
The bottom line: Definitely two thumbs up
